Healthy Gums Are Pink and Firm to the Touch

Most people can tell when a tooth is in trouble. Gums are harder to read, and gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults precisely because its early stages are so easy to ignore.

What healthy gums look like

Healthy gums are pale pink, firm to the touch, and sit tightly against the teeth. They have a slightly stippled texture, similar to orange peel. They do not bleed when you brush or floss.

That last point deserves emphasis. Bleeding gums are not normal and they are not a sign that you brushed too hard. Healthy tissue does not bleed under a soft-bristled toothbrush.

The early signs

Gingivitis, the reversible early stage, shows as redness along the gum margin, slight puffiness, bleeding when brushing, and persistent bad breath. At this stage, thorough cleaning and a professional scale can return the tissue to health completely.

When it progresses

Untreated, inflammation moves deeper and begins to destroy the bone anchoring the teeth. Gums recede, teeth look longer, gaps open between them, and eventually teeth loosen. That bone loss is permanent. Treatment can halt the process, but it cannot rebuild what has gone.

What raises your risk

Smoking is the single largest modifiable risk factor, and it also masks bleeding, which delays diagnosis. Diabetes, particularly when poorly controlled, works in both directions: it worsens gum disease, and gum disease makes blood sugar harder to manage. Pregnancy, certain medications, and genetics also play a part.

What to do

Brush twice daily for two minutes with a soft brush, clean between the teeth every day, and have your gums assessed regularly. If your gums bleed, book an appointment rather than waiting to see whether it settles. Early gum disease is one of the most treatable conditions in dentistry, and one of the most damaging when left.
