Root Canal Treatment

Endodontic treatment that removes infected pulp and saves a tooth that would otherwise be lost.

Root canal treatment, or endodontic treatment, is needed when the pulp inside a tooth becomes inflamed or infected, usually through deep decay, a crack, or injury. The infected tissue is removed, the canals are cleaned and shaped, and the space is sealed.

The purpose is to keep your own tooth. An untreated infection does not resolve on its own and can spread into the surrounding bone, so the realistic alternative is extraction followed by an implant or bridge.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic. Most patients find it comparable to having a filling placed. A treated tooth becomes more brittle over time and usually needs a crown afterwards to protect it against fracture. Some mild tenderness for a few days after treatment is normal.

Suitability and results depend on a clinical examination. Your dentist will explain options, risks and costs before any treatment.
